Halo Legends: The Package Review
December 13, 2009
The third addition to Halo Legends is The Package and was split into two parts. They showed the first part last week and the full thing was shown yesterday. The Package shows Master Chief with a squad of other Spartans who are tasked with getting aboard a Covenant ship to retrieve a highly important package. This one has quite a lot of references to the Halo novels and characters from it are in the anime. Casio Entertainment are behind this one.
The first part starts with the briefing of the mission and then goes onto the initial attack. Each Spartan is in a Booster Frame which is a small flying vehicle which packs quite a bit of firepower. This attack focuses on aerial fights for the most part and has many scenes with evasive manoeuvres being performed which always look cool. There is one incident which requires Kelly, a female Spartan, to board another Booster Frame’s turret which leads on to some cool gunfights. When the first part ends three Spartans, including Master Chief, are in a bubble shield surrounded by covenant troops.
The first part is good but the second part is where The Package excels. As soon as the bubble shield fades, the shit hits the fan and it goes from good to great. The epic Halo music kicks in and the three Spartans storm their way through every enemy they see. Seeing three Spartans take on that much covenant is just plain awesome. It’s really exciting and just generally bad ass.
After leaving the first room, they move into a corridor which is my favourite bit of the entire short. Master Chief leads with an Assault Rifle and two SMGs while one of the other Spartans has a Spartan Laser and the other grenades (Didn’t name the other two, to leave it as a surprise). They storm the corridor taking out everything that moves. There is also a fantastic part where it goes into first person for a bit which is a great reference. It then goes on to a more story focused part which I won’t spoil.
However, this does have a huge downside: I want to play it. All the time when watching this I just wanted to play a Halo level where I could do all the cool stuff Master Chief did. I really hope that Halo: Reach has a similar level because it would be great fun if it did.
This short has the best use of music out of the ones that have been shown so far. It gives it the epic Halo feel and makes everything very fun and exciting. The first part doesn’t use any music from the games but the second part uses plenty.
The Package is the best part of Halo Legends so far, purely for the second part. It had plenty of references to the games and even the books which give it great appeal to the fans. On top of that the action scenes were superb and the use of Halo music was fantastic.
